World Assotiation of Ethnic Minority Theatres
The National Theatre of Budapest has long placed special emphasis on presenting the work of theatres representing ethnic and linguistic minorities. Since 2018, it hosted the Jelen/ lét Festival, dedicated to theatre companies of Hungary’s ethnic minorities. later, in 2023, as part of the MITEM festival, it welcomed performances from the Synergy World Theatre Festival, originally founded in Novi Sad, Serbia.
This ongoing commitment reaches a new milestone in 2025: the 12th edition of MITEM features productions by theatre companies representing the Khanty and Mansi (ob-Ugric) peoples of Russia, the Turkish community of North Macedonia, the German and Jewish communities of Romania, and the Russian-speaking minority of Georgia.
As part of this year’s “minority programme,” MITEM and the National Theatre have invited artists and researchers for a professional roundtable discussion. The goal of this meeting is to lay the groundwork for the founding of a World Assotiation of Ethnic Minority Theatres – an international platform designed to unite, support, and amplify the work of this diverse, vibrant, and often challenging field, giving voice and visibility to ethnic minority theatre artists and institutions worldwide.
