Twelfth Night is the last of Shakespeare’s comedies, and arguably a synthesis of the many things the bard had tried in his earlier comedies and brought to the stage to the delight of his audiences. The play deals with remarkably complex human relationships, including the relationships between siblings, ruler and servant, friends, and, most importantly, lovers. Thus it breaks the traditional framework of a so-called comedy. The line between the light-hearted, liberating, mirthful comedy and the sublime tragedy is so thin at times that Shakespeare offers considerable room for interpretation in both clefs. In his production of Hamlet, László Bocsárdi strove to find a language of theater with which to express the state of a world “out of joint” and our relationship to the tragic worldview. In Twelfth Night, he continues this search.
The production was created with the generous support of the National Cultural Fund of Hungary.
