Brand serves God. Not the grandfather-like gentle God of love and forgiveness, but a young, strong and strict God that admits no compromises. To become worthy of his God and accommodate their lives with their faith, people would have to change completely. He is asked to become a priest in his village that has been struck by hunger. Brand does not demand more of people than of himself, but even that is too much. He used to be the living embodiment of “all or nothing”. He gave up everything for nothing in return. Is it possible to live without lies and compromises?
“The fact that Brand is a priest is of secondary importance. The all or nothing doctrine is valid for all aspects of life; it is there in love or art… Brand is myself in in my most extreme moments.” Ibsen
