Morfov’s stage vision begins with a dark scene, and this tone is characteristic of the whole performance, which was a great success and earned professional acknowledgement due to its captivating visual effects and excellent acting. Morfov, a director regarded as one of contemporary Bulgarian theatre’s enfants terribles, stayed true to the text of the French author, but alternates the tragic motifs with episodes of commedia dell’arte. In his interpretation, the performance deals with the crucial decision Don Juan has to face during the last phase of his life. The Lothario and immoral hero finds himself at a crossroads several times: how should he continue, will he be able to change or relate differently to his surroundings before stepping across the “grand frontier”…?
